Receding gums can cause intense pain and inflammation. Sometimes it’s hard to get into a dental office soon enough to relieve that pain. Luckily, there are a few home remedies for receding gums that can be used to help reduce pain, inflamed gums and even aid in repairing damaged gum tissue. Most can be done just once a day after regular brushing and flossing. Adding one of these simple, inexpensive remedies to your daily routine could save you a lot of heartache and pain while you are waiting to get into a dental office.

Home Remedies for Receding Gums

  • Green Tea
  • Sesame Oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Clove and Clove Oil
  • Eucalyptus
  • Coconut Oil
  • Lemon Oil

Green Tea

Green tea reduces gum inflammation and helps prevent gum disease because of the antioxidants it contains. Drinking one cup a day will aid in gum health and reduce gum recession.

Sesame Oil

Sesame oil can be used to lower plaque buildup and protect gums from bacteria which cause inflamed gums. Simply, swish a quarter of a cup for 30 seconds after brushing to protect your teeth from bacterial damage.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains anti-inflammatory agents, making it very useful for repairing damaged tissue cells. Brushing with a bit of aloe vera gel once a day can benefit your gums and teeth by reducing any inflammation and fighting bacteria that causes gum disease. If you prefer, you may mix a small amount of aloe vera with water to create a swishable consistency and use it as a daily mouthwash after you brush.

Clove and Clove Oil

Clove oil has been used to prevent oral diseases for many centuries. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, clove oil is a great solution for reducing gum pain. Gently massage 1-2 drops over gums once a day or chew a clove letting the oils spread throughout your whole mouth.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a strong essential oil used to prevent gum disease. A few drops of eucalyptus must be diluted with a small amount of water because it’s such a concentrated substance. It then should be massaged gently over the affected gums.

Coconut Oil

Another remedy to be used daily is coconut oil. Coconut oil is antimicrobial, which makes it a great home remedy for gum recession. It works to prevent further damage and pain. Swishing just a small amount for 30 seconds helps to rid your mouth of harmful bacteria that causes gum disease.

Lemon Oil

Unlike the other treatments listed above, lemon oil cannot be used every day because its acidic properties may damage tooth enamel. However, when used once a week, lemon oil can prevent tooth decay and gum recession. In fact, lemon oil also aids in the regrowth of gum tissue. To use, mix an ounce of extra virgin olive oil with the juice from a quarter of a lemon and let it sit for a week or so. Swish or gently brush half of the mixture in the morning and the other half after about lunchtime.

Taking just a few minutes a day to implement one of these remedies could decrease pain caused by receding gums. These remedies are not designed to take the place of regular dental work, but they can be beneficial when you find yourself in a situation where you cannot get into a dental office as soon as you would like.
